When Should I Replace My Sump Pump?
On average, sump pumps need to be replaced every 7 to 9 years. Here are some signs it’s time to replace your sump pump:
1. Smells Bad
The smell may not be the sump pump itself, but if it’s not working like it should and your basement is too moist- its possible the smell is coming from mould or other damage in the basement due to standing water.
2. Making Loud Noises
Any loud noises, be it gurgling, rattling, or clanging, are indicators of an issue with your sump pump. As the motor reaches the end of its life, it will get very loud- it needs to be replaced immediately. If the impeller is clogged, you may hear a grinding or screeching noise- but if it’s rattling, the impeller is damaged.
It may also simply be installed improperly. A plumber will install pipes as straight as possible to avoid any gurgling and issues with connecting peices to ensure a quiet pumping process.
3. Constantly Running
If it has been blue skies for weeks in summer and your sump pump is running, something is seriously wrong with the pump and are in danger of running out the motor. This is often due to selecting the wrong size motor for your basin, or the float switch (which triggers the motor to run) is stuck in the “on” position.
It could also be an issue with the check valve, which is responsible for making sure the water you pump out, stays out when the motor shuts off. If the water drains back into the basin, your basin will never empty and your motor won’t shut off.
